Around the web

November 7, 2008

It's been a busy day for my PR apparently. I been popping up in a few places today so here's a quick rundown.

Schipul Blog

My fellow coder Eloy wrote a sweet post about me on the Schipul Blog.

"I'm not going to highlight all the niceties of Brian LeBlanc, this post is merely to tell him and the rest of the world that we appreciate his time here and are more than proud of his direction and future endeavors."

You can read the full text on the Schipul Blog, though this is about half of it.

Eloy and Glen taught me pretty much everything I know about developing during the year we spent sharing that little office and I owe them a lot.

Twitter

I signed up for Twitter today so if you want you can follow me. I just got on the thing so there probably isn't much up there but those who know me know I have strong opinions about things and maybe I'll share some of them with you in 140 characters or less.

Shout out to Ibarra for making me Mr. Popular today!

Some house-keeping

October 29, 2008

Now that I've had a day to catch my breath and run over a few things here is a status report on how it's all coming together.

Updates

  • The site validates! I've run over each page individually and they all validate using my Firefox Web Developer toolbar. The errors were mostly syntax issues and a couple small other issues, but not major breaks.
  • The projects are up! Well almost all of them are up. The main Jones college sites still need to be put in but I'm confident those will be up today. I talked to J over at Schipul and she says my posts on my Tendenci-related projects look alright. Those projects are proprietary and property of Schipul so I don't want to ruffle any feathers.
  • I'm working on the contact form but it's not up yet.

I've been getting lots of positive feedback from the handful of people who have seen the site but they are all professionals so it's a confidence boost. I haven't done much graphic design in the past few months so it's good to know I still got it.

The site is up!

October 28, 2008

A historic day indeed, and perhaps one long overdue. I've been working on my personal site for a while now and thanks to Andromeda, it has a home for now. I'll be getting my own host soon but Andromeda was kind enough to get me online today!

So what have we got today? Obviously all the sections that will be on this site are still being compiled but I wanted to get this out there. The projects page is now up, though in the future I will be dividing projects by design and development. Of course in practice, things never lend themselves to this simple categorization.

The development blog is also coming together. I hope to feature a design blog on the site at a later date but my primary focus the last few months have been on development, the only exceptions being this site which I designed myself, and Trailergasm, which I consulted on, while primary illustration work was done by my friend Tom.

I want to give a few shout outs real quick.

  • Andromeda: for getting me a temporary host. I'm sure I'll be paying her back via some CMS stuff. We'll get a system up and running yet!
  • Tom: for drawing the shoes. I'm not an illustrator, though I take a little pride in being a semi-designer. I love my shoes and Tom really brought em to life.
  • Xtina: for being positive. Also for discussing all my favorite TV shows with me.

That's all folks! Browse around the site. There isn't much now but there's a lot more coming! Hopefully I'll get a few of my songs up in the soon-to-exist multimedia section. I'm gonna have recommendations in there too.

Projects

Trailergasm

Trailergasm

Trailergasm is a site that offers blunt and often sarcastic reviews of upcoming movie trailers. It is a pet project of a few of my friends and a learning experience for me.

The site is built on a PHP codebase with MYSQL back-end. Current features include security levels, template engine, and form validation. You can read about the development progress on the Development Blog.

Jones College

Jones College

When I was webmaster of Jones College during my Rice tenure, I used the site as a platform to practice my design & coding skills, particularly CSS. The Jones website featured 3 different designs that could be switched using a Javascript-based stylesheet switcher.

Sadly the Jones designs are no longer online, as the next webmaster after me took the site in a different direction, rolling out Drupal to allow for dynamic updating of the content. Some of the orientation week sites I designed are still archived on the site. You can see all the designs on the projects page.
